           Senator Kate Kelly

           On the Record

           Protecting Open Space, Clean Air,
           and Water Quality

An environmental attorney by profession, during her time in office, Senator Kelly has become one of most the authoritative voices in the Idaho Legislature on environmental issues. She has routinely advocated for open space, planned growth, protecting our air quality, and ensuring sufficient clean water to meet our future needs.

In her first two terms in office, Senator Kelly's environmental work has included:

Introducing a resolution requesting state agencies to identify opportunities and steps the legislature could take to prepare for the likelihood of future greenhouse gas regulation and develop energy conservation and instate renewable resources.
Co-authoring a comprehensive amendment to the Noxious Weed Law to address non-native plants adversely impacting Idaho lands and waters.
  •  Carrying the Idaho Community Reinvestment Pilot Initiative to provide for financial assistance to eligible property owners conducting voluntary cleanup of abandoned contaminated properties.
  •  Carrying the Uniform Environmental Covenants Act dealing with the future use of contaminated real estate or brownfields.
  •  Introducing a bill adopting a state mercury emissions control plan.
  •  Introducing a resolution to assess the nature and extent of mercury contamination in the environment of the state of Idaho and the potential environmental impacts from the addition of any new sources of mercury.
Supporting a measure to require vehicle emissions testing throughout an airshed where air pollution levels are high and an alternative control measure is not available.
